AUGUST WAS MUCH WARMER THAN NORMAL IN THE CONCORD AREA WITH NEAR
NORMAL PRECIPITATION. EARLY IN THE MONTH A BROAD RIDGE STARTED TO
DEVELOP IN THE MID LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE ACROSS THE CENTRAL PART
OF THE CONUS. BY THE END OF THE FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST, THIS RIDGE
EXPANDED AND SHIFTED EAST WITH THE CENTER OF THE RIDGE MOVING OVER
NEW ENGLAND. THIS RIDGE BROUGHT EIGHT DAYS IN A ROW WITH HIGH
TEMPERATURES AT OR ABOVE 90 DEGREES FROM THE 2ND TO THE 9TH AND WAS
THE SECOND LONGEST STREAK ON RECORD WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES AT OR
ABOVE 90 DEGREES. A COLD FRONT THEN CROSSED NEW ENGLAND THE NIGHT OF
THE AUGUST 9TH, WHICH BROUGHT MUCH COOLER AIR WITH TEMPERATURES THEN
RUNNING SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH. A
RIDGE STARTED TO BUILD OVER THE WESTERN ATLANTIC DURING THE THIRD
WEEK OF THE MONTH THAT ALLOWED FOR WARMER AND MORE HUMID CONDITIONS
THAT GENERALLY PERSISTED THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH. MUCH OF THE
RAINFALL THAT DID OCCUR DURING THE MONTH CAME FROM PASSING FRONTAL
SYSTEMS THAT BROUGHT SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 73.5 DEGREES, WHICH WAS 4
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND TIES WITH 1972 AS THE WARMEST AUGUST ON
RECORD. THE COOLEST AUGUST ON RECORD WAS 61.1 DEGREES IN 1903. THE
FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE WARMEST AVERAGE AUGUST TEMPERATURES ON
RECORD.

A TOTAL OF 3.54 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL, WHICH WAS 0.09 INCHES
BELOW NORMAL. THE DRIEST AUGUST ON RECORD WAS 0.06 INCHES IN 1996.
THE WETTEST 10.67 IN 2018. THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION FELL ON THE
22ND WHEN 0.96 INCHES WERE MEASURED.
