AUGUST WAS WARMER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL IN THE GRAY AREA. THE MOST
PERSISTENT HEAT OCCURRED EARLY IN THE MONTH WHILE THE MAJORITY OF
THE RAINFALL OCCURRED DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE MONTH. EARLY IN
THE MONTH, A BROAD RIDGE STARTED TO DEVELOP IN THE MID LEVELS OF THE
ATMOSPHERE ACROSS THE CENTRAL PART OF THE CONUS. BY THE END OF THE
FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST, THIS RIDGE EXPANDED AND SHIFTED EAST WITH THE
CENTER OF THE RIDGE MOVING OVER NEW ENGLAND. THIS RIDGE PERSISTED
INTO THE SECOND WEEK OF AUGUST AND WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HOTTEST
STRETCH OF WEATHER DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS IN THE GRAY AREA. FROM
AUGUST 4TH TO 8TH HIGH TEMPERATURES WERE IN THE UPPER 80S TO MID 90S
WHILE LOW TEMPERATURES DID NOT DROP BELOW 70 DEGREES FROM THE 5TH TO
THE 7TH. A SLOW MOVING COLD FRONT APPROACHED ON THE 8TH BRINGING
SHOWERS AND COOLER WEATHER FROM THE 10TH TO THE 13TH. A RIDGE
STARTED TO BUILD OVER THE WESTERN ATLANTIC DURING THE THIRD WEEK OF
THE MONTH THAT ALLOWED FOR WARMER AND MORE HUMID CONDITIONS THAT
GENERALLY PERSISTED THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH. DURING THE FINAL
10 DAYS OF THE MONTH A SERIES OF UPPER TROUGHS PUSHED ACROSS
SOUTHEASTERN CANADA WITH FRONTAL SYSTEMS BRINGING BOUTS OF RAIN.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 71.4 DEGREES, WHICH WAS
2.8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND THE 4TH WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD. THE
WARMEST AUGUST WAS 72.2 DEGREES IN 2001. THE COOLEST WAS 66.0
DEGREES IN 2008. THE FOLLOWING TABLE LISTS THE WARMEST AVERAGE
AUGUST TEMPERATURES AT GRAY.

WARMEST AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN AUGUST (SINCE 1996)...
RANK TEMP YEAR
1 72.2 2002
2 72.1 2016
      72.1 2002
4 71.4 2022
5 71.3 2021

A TOTAL OF 4.25 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL, WHICH WAS 0.41 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL. THE WETTEST AUGUST WAS 8.19 INCHES IN 2011. THE DRIEST
WAS 0.16 INCHES IN 1996. THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION FELL ON THE 31ST
WHEN 1.73 INCHES WERE RECORDED.
