...WET NORTHERN PANHANDLE AND ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR
SOUTHEAST ALASKA FOR AUGUST...

A series of atmospheric rivers approached the north and central
Panhandle, bringing appreciable amounts of rain to those areas all
month, whereas the southern Panhandle did not feel any impacts from
those until about the last week of the month. Areas remained rather
mild according to daily average temperatures.

3 of the 4 sites were above normal for monthly precipitation. The
southern Panhandle, including Ketchikan, was below normal as they
were under the influence of high pressure and offshore flow the vast
majority of the time for about first 3/4 of the month. For the
northern half of the Panhandle, including Yakutat, Juneau, and
Sitka, had above normal monthly precipitation due to the
aforementioned deluge of atmospheric rivers. Ketchikan was 3.31
inches below normal for total rainfall for the month. Juneau, Sitka,
and Yakutat were 2.64, 2.3, and 2.03 inches above normal,
respectively. Juneau Airport reported a record 2.28 inches of
rainfall on the 29th of August from a frontal system accompanied by
a deep Atmospheric River, which broke the previous record of 1.26
inches, which was set on that date back in 2009.

All 4 climate sites ranged between 1.2 to 2.7 degrees above normal
in terms of temperature for the month. The above normal daily
average temperatures were primarily caused by overnight low
temperatures being moderated to above average values by the
increased cloud cover and precipitation from the aforementioned
frontal systems accompanied by atmospheric rivers, which inhibited
radiational cooling. There were only a few very relatively short
breaks between the weather systems. Daytime high temperatures were
around normal for the 3 north and central Panhandle sites. For the
southern Panhandle, including Ketchikan, the above normal daily
average temperatures were primarily caused by that area being under
a dominant ridge of high pressure, which allowed for prolonged
decreased cloudiness and much more daytime heating for about 3/4 of
the month until the last quarter of the month, which is when they
started getting impacted much more by the Atmospheric Rivers, as
well. Overnight low temperatures were not too far off from average
for Ketchikan for the month.
