Drought Information Statement

...Exceptional Drought (D4) introduced in northeast Nebraska...


.Drought intensity and extent: According to the September 6
issuance of the U.S. Drought Monitor, Exceptional Drought (D4) is
now being shown across portions of northeastern Nebraska,
extending across the southern portions of Dakota and Dixon
counties and over to the Sioux City metro area. Extreme Drought
(D3) is being shown in all or parts of Charles Mix, Bon Homme,
Hutchinson, Turner, Lincoln, Yankton, Clay and Union counties in
South Dakota, and Sioux, Plymouth, Cherokee, and Woodbury
counties in northwest Iowa. Severe Drought(D2) is being shown
across all or parts of Gregory County in South Dakota; and Clay,
Buena Vista, O`Brien and Ida counties in northwest Iowa. Moderate
Drought (D1) or Abnormally Dry conditions (D0) are depicted across
much of the rest of the region except for a narrow area from near
De Smet to Sioux Falls to Jackson MN. The percentage of the region
in D4 now is 1.22 percent. The percentage of the forecast area in
D3 or worse is 12.68 percent, down slightly from 15.01 percent on
August 9. The total percentage of the forecast area in D2 or worse
is basically unchanged in the past month, standing at 27.79
percent. The percentage of the area in Moderate Drought (D1) or
worse has increased in the past month from 47.96 percent to 56.11
percent currently. The portion of the region not depicted with any
drought or dryness has decreased from 31.87 percent to 21.00
percent in the past month.

.Precipitation: In the last week, the only areas that saw any
fairly widespread measurable rainfall were in the James River
basin from Huron to Yankton, but total amounts there were
generally less than 0.10 inch. For the last month, most of the
region has averaged between 10 and 50 percent of normal, with a
narrow band of slightly above normal rainfall along the Missouri
River from Pickstown to Sioux City.

.Temperature: Temperatures for the last month have averaged
between 1 and 4 degrees above normal. For the last 90 days,
temperatures have averaged between 2 and 4 degrees above normal.

.Hydrologic conditions: Current streamflows are running normal to
above normal on the James, upper Big Sioux, Little Sioux, Redwood
and Des Moines rivers, and mainly below to much below normal on
the Vermillion, lower Big Sioux, Floyd, and Ocheyedan rivers.
Ground water levels in southeast South Dakota and northeast
Nebraska are currently in the 10th to 15th percentile, or below to
much below normal.

.Soil Moisture Conditions: Current soil moisture anomalies are
around 3 inches below normal along the Highway 14 corridor,
worsening to 5 to 6 inches below normal south of I-90. This
includes values being near record low levels along the Missouri
River between NE and SD and into parts of far northwestern Iowa
around Sioux City.


.Agricultural Impacts: Some corn crops will be losing yield due
to lack of moisture and high heat during the tasseling and
pollination phases. In some areas, the corn is not even suitable
for cutting for silage due to being too dry. In south-central
South Dakota, some pastures have become too dry and short for
putting cattle on them, and many people are saying that there will
not be a third cutting of hay.

.Hydrologic Impacts: None known at this time.

.Fire Hazards: Short term fuels are drying, and there are reports
of easy ignition of grassland or pasture fires, but so far these
have been quickly controlled and the spread of these small fires
has not been great.


.LOCAL DROUGHT OUTLOOK: The latest seasonal drought outlook from
the Climate Prediction Center shows that the drought is expected
to persist through the end of November in those areas already in
D1 or worse, and drought development is likely across part of
south central South Dakota north of the current D1 or worse

The latest 6-10 day, 8-14 day and 3-4 week outlooks show
increased probabilities for above normal temperatures and
generally near normal precipitation on average for the region.
The 3 month outlook for September through November shows increased
chances for above normal temperatures and below normal

.NEXT ISSUANCE DATE: The product will be updated around September
29, unless conditions or outlooks change significantly.
