.PRECIPITATION:

For the week ending August 29 most of southern Wisconsin received
a few tenths of rain or less. There were isolated thunderstorms
in far eastern Wisconsin that brought 0.75 to 1.5 inches. The dry
weather was accompanied by above normal temperatures with high
temperatures in the 80s and 90s. Rainfall of 2 to 3 inches across
southeast Wisconsin on August 14 helped to reduce shorter term
precipitation deficits, but longer term deficits remain. Southwest
and south-central missed out on the recent rainfall and short and
long term deficits are increasing.

30 day rainfall deficits are 1.5 to 3 inches in the extreme drought
area and 0.75 to 2 inches in the severe drought area. These values
are 50 to 70% of normal. 90 day rainfall deficits are 4 to 8 inches
in the extreme drought area and 3 to 6 inches in the severe drought
area. These values are 50 to 70% of normal.

.HYDROLOGIC CONDITIONS:

28 day stream flows are in the 10-50th percentile across most of
southern Wisconsin. Values are in the 76-80th percentile in far
eastern Wisconsin due to the precipitation two weeks ago.

.SUMMARY OF IMPACTS:

According to the USDA Crop Report on soil moisture: Topsoil moisture
in southwest Wisconsin: Very short 27%, Short 43%. Topsoil moisture
in south-central Wisconsin: Very Short 15%, Short 42%. Topsoil
moisture in southeast Wisconsin: Very Short 12%, Short 56%. Subsoil
moisture in southwest Wisconsin: Very Short 43%, Short 41%. Subsoil
moisture in south-central Wisconsin: Very Short 32%, Short 35%.
Subsoil moisture in southeast Wisconsin: Very Short 13%, Short
51%.

There have been reports of stressed crops, reduced yields, and
supplemental feed needed due to poor pasture conditions across the
extreme and severe drought areas. Some reports note these drought
impacts have not been seen since 2012.

.DROUGHT MITIGATION ACTIONS:

None reported.

.LOCAL DROUGHT OUTLOOK:
Dry weather is expected for the next 5 days along with above
average temperatures. Some rain is forecast for Sep 6 and 7 but
amounts will likely be less than one inch. The outlook from the
Climate Prediction Center for September 7-13 indicates a 60%
chance for above average temperature, a 33% chance of near normal
temperature and a 7% chance of below average temperature, and 35%
chance for below average precipitation, a 33% chance of near
normal precipitation, and a 32% chance of above normal
precipitation. This means there is a high probability for above
average temperature and just slightly enhanced probability for
below average precipitation, with near average precipitation and
above average precipitation almost equally likely. Drought
conditions are likely to continue for the next few weeks. Average
precipitation is about one inch per week.
