...One of the Most Intense Heat Waves on Record Across Southwestern
California From Late August Through Mid September 2022...

A large, strong and persistent upper level high pressure system
centered over Utah and Nevada and extending into southern California
brought one of the most intense heat waves on record to much of
southwestern California mostly from August 30th through September
12th, 2022.

The heat wave produced an extended period of widespread Excessive
Heat Warnings across the region, especially from August 31st through
September 9th. High temperatures during much of this period were
often between 105 and 112 degrees in areas away from the immediate
coast. What made this heat wave unique was not only the excessively
high daytime temperatures, but also the persistently high overnight
low temperatures through September 9th, but also lingered into the
weekend of September 11th and 12th due to a tropical airmass from
the remnants of Hurricane Kay. Lows in many area were in the 70s,
with temperatures remaining in the 80s in some valley and foothill
areas, greatly adding to the heat stress.

The following table lists, for each location, the average
temperature for the warmest 10-day period during the late August to
mid September 2022 heat wave, the dates this warm period occurred,
the warmest 10-day average temperature prior to 2022, the dates of
the prior warmest 10-day period, and the rank of the 2022 warm
period in terms of of the average temperature over any 10-day period.
